Casper Verborg

is a Dutch painter based in Arnhem, Netherlands. He studied at ArtEZ, Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Arnhem and KASK, School of Arts, Ghent.

“I am fascinated by the ambiguity of expressions and body language. The face plays an important role in my work. It is the part of the body where we show what we feel and think, or what we are trying to hide. It’s an interaction between inner feelings and outward appearance. Through the expression of the portrait I try to evoke a multiplicity of meanings, judgments, and empathy from the viewer.

The tension between pigment, likeness and interpretation is my basic principle while painting. It is a search of the moment where material, representation and composition coincide. It conveys a point where attraction and alienation meets.

I have a preference for smooth, juicy paint. Liquid and transparent. I paint in multiple layers; overlapping tones give depth and richness to the image. I wipe paint away and build new layers around it. Thick strokes are alternated with glassy stripes. The drips, splashes and splotches on the canvas are a direct result of this process. The method of the painting, and hence its history is clearly made visible. In the eyes of the beholder the painting moves back and forth, from the illusion to the gesture. The anatomy of the individual coincides with the anatomy of the paint, both abstract as realistic, both skin as paint. This gives the painting a lively appearance, and discloses a vivid, fluid reality and not a solid, frozen or momentary reality as captured by the camera lens.”—Casper Verborg
